Travelogue

A Solo Show by James Edwards

Dates: August 28-September 29, 2023

First Friday Opening Reception: Friday, September 1, 2023, 5-7pm

Gallery Underground will host Travelogue, an exhibition of paintings by James Edwards this September.  James studied at the Corcoran School of Art in the 1990s and has painted intermittently for years. It was during the Covid lockdown that he began to focus on intimate urban scenes, which will comprise this fall's exhibition.

Edwards finds comfort in the works of artists Gustave Caillebotte and Edward Hopper who also made urban scenes a major part of their oeuvre. He paints small-scale works in oil, mostly on gessoed, 9x12 inch, masonite panels. He finds this scale presents interesting challenges in terms of composition and degree of realism. He aspires to Winslow Homer’s admonition to "paint what one sees"; whatever else one wants to offer will come out anyway.
