The Pluviophile
A Solo Show by Barry Keith
Dates: October 2 – 27, 2023
First Friday Opening Reception: Friday, October 6, 2023, 5-7pm
This October, Gallery Underground presents The Pluviophile, a solo show by Barry Barnett Keith. The show features a series of large rain landscapes created in dedication to the artist's older sister, who recently passed. Barry's sister loved the rain and his positive memories of her largely influences his recent works. The show will also consist of small drawings and watercolors.
As a boy, Keith was fascinated by French Impressionist painters like Monet and the works of John Singer Sargent and Whistler. Over the years Keith developed his skills enough to be able to paint outdoors as a plein air artist. Rather than paint a photographic picture, Keith’s goal in landscape painting is to translate what he sees and have the paint itself dictate the direction of the painting.
Keith regards creating art as an act of gratitude for the opportunity to live. “I want to be as prolific as possible as a painter and as a teacher simply to show gratitude, nothing else.” Keith has taught the arts in the Prince Georges County Maryland Public school system for fifteen years, twelve years at Suitland High School, and three in elementary school. He is presently the Lead Art Teacher at Mattaponi Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD and Rose Valley Elementary School in Fort Washington, MD.
The opening reception on October 6, from 5 -7PM will have live music performed by saxophonist Igor Brailovskiy. Food generously provided by Georgetown Butcher Shop will be served with wine.
