Contrast – July 1-31, 2020

“Contrast” Gallery Underground Art Exhibition in July
Dates:  July 1-31, 2020

No opening reception this month due to health safety regulations

Gallery Underground presents Contrast, on view during the month of July. “There are dark shadows on the earth, but its lights are stronger in the contrast,” goes a quote by Charles Dickens. Slowly emerging from sheltering at home, artists have submitted works that create drama and command attention through the use of contrast, both in color and subject.  The show features works in a variety of media including mixed media, paintings, sculpture, wood, glass, and ceramics.

Each month the gallery changes its entire exhibit and presents a new show from its talented members in many forms: mixed media, paintings, sculpture, wood, glass, and ceramic work.  Gallery Underground anchors the visual arts component of Crystal City’s Art Underground, and on First Fridays (first Friday of every month), it hosts an art reception free and open to all from 5-7pm (Note: receptions will resume when larger gatherings are deemed safe).

In addition to monthly rotating exhibitions, Gallery Underground hosts a variety of community events, like lunchtime paint-ins and dance and musical performances.  Gallery Underground is sponsored by the Arlington Artists Alliance (AAA), in partnership with the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID), and JBG Smith.  For more information about Gallery events, visit the gallery website at galleryunderground.org

Shelter In Place – June 5-26, 2020

“Shelter In Place” Gallery Underground Art Exhibition in June

Dates: June 5-26, 2020

Gallery Underground has now opened at 50% capacity according to the Governor’s order for retail establishments, with safety guidelines in place. Our new show, Shelter in Place, focuses on artwork that member artists have been creating while sheltering at home. Some works are inspired by artists dreaming of travel, or gathering at favorite places; others have been inspired by home – gardens, still lifes, family. The show features works in a variety of media including mixed media, paintings, sculpture, wood, glass and ceramics. Many of these works are also available for purchase in our online store at https://galleryunderground.org/store/. We will not be having a First Friday opening but welcome patrons to the gallery during our open hours of M-F 10AM – 6PM.

Spring Dreams

An online show of new work for May

View Gallery Underground’s Spring Dreams Online Show

We are all feeling the effects of being isolated in our homes. A little good news? Art is a proven way of helping us de-stress and improve our brain function and thinking patterns. It can also improve our physical wellbeing, with studies identifying a link between looking at art and the normalization of heart rate, blood pressure, and even cortisol levels.

Gallery Underground is here to help! We miss seeing all our friends and patrons at our monthly receptions and at visits to the gallery, but our artists are at home making beautiful new art, and this Friday is…First Friday!

Our May “show,” titled Spring Dreams, while not up on the walls of our temporarily shuttered gallery, is available for viewing and purchasing on our website. Click through the beautiful images and feel your stress level decrease! Sip a glass of wine and it will be just like attending our First Friday reception.

We also have gift cards available for purchase, which will help out the Arlington Artists Alliance, a 501 c (3) organization, during this crisis. Give your mom a gift card to purchase a beautiful piece of local art for Mother’s Day!

Opening Reception and Meet the Artists: Friday, March 6, 5-7pm

Free and open to the public

Arlington, VA – During March, Gallery Underground proudly presents “The Divine Feminine,” a group exhibition of representative and abstract paintings by Beth Hudgins, Linda Maldonado, Elise Ritter and Deborah Taylor. Each artist envisions the show’s theme through unique imagery interpreting the feminine side of spirituality: the natural world, human relationships, the containing vessel and other facets. Together, these paintings express how the Divine Feminine embodies the power of inspiration and wholeness that dwells within and around us.

Visitors will also find new works by Gallery members in the main gallery including paintings, sculpture, glass, ceramics, and woodworking.
