I paint traditional subjects with a contemporary aesthetic. The intersection of land, water, and sky inspires my work, as do the “scapes” of domestic life—gardens, porches, and domestic spots that take the viewer “home.” I recently returned to Virginia after nearly eight years in southern Louisiana. I recently returned to Virginia after nearly eight years in southern Louisiana where I enjoyed exploring the farms and back roads, coastlines and waterways by painting them, captivated by the ways the landscape was different from and similar to Virginia.
I work primarily in oils because of way they capture the brilliance of color and light but occasionally explore with soft pastels, gouache, and acrylics. I prefer painting from life whether parking my easel off the road, in my studio, or on the porch. As I work, I’m constantly seeking the story behind the scene: What part of the story do I want to tell? Does the scene connect with my story? Will viewers find their own story in my painting?
